We are so excited to have glass artist, Jason Chakravarty offering a week long glass “collaging and wax” class.
March 6th-13th, 10-5pm, with flexible studio hours in the evening. Cost $500
Collaging with Wax
This class will utilize the lost wax technique to produce kiln cast glass. We will start with found objects and recognizable imagery. Using silicone we will create replica molds. This enables us to then pour multiples of the original form in wax. Using the waxes as our imagery and vocabulary, we will collage together compositions. Once the wax compositions are assembled and cleaned up, we will then invest the wax in a mixture of plaster, silica and water. The wax is then melted out. The empty investment mold is loaded into a kiln and glass is melted into it. Once the kiln cools, we will remove the investment from the glass. The glass is then cleaned and ground to finish.
The class will cover flexible replica mold making, investment techniques for wax, melting glass into investment molds, and cold working glass. This class is open to all levels.

Artist Statement
Jason Chakravarty is a mixed media, object maker living in Arizona. The majority of his work is cast glass and incorporates neon for illumination. Glass can be anything; thick, thin, shiny, dull, rough, smooth, transparent, or opaque. It is the only material that can capture light. While material and notably glass are important, his emphasis is within the narrative. His most recent works are semi-auto biographical and reflect on human relationships, communication, and social networking.
Bio
Jason Chakravarty began incorporating glass through the use of neon into his sculpture in 1998 while attending Arizona State University. He was employed for four years at a commercial neon sign shop where he learned technical fundamentals of the neon process. In 2002 he began illuminating hot shop forms and kiln casting glass while attending graduate school at California State University Fullerton. He has taken workshops nationwide including at Pilchuck, Pittsburgh Glass Center, Penland School of Crafts, and University of California San Diego. He has taught neon and kiln casting workshops nationwide including Arizona State University, Corning Museum of Glass, Goggleworks, Arrowmont School of Crafts, Urban Glass, Cleveland Institute of Art, Pittsburgh Glass Center, Appalachian Center For Crafts, and Penland School of Crafts. His work has been shown in over 100 exhibitions. Currently his work is represented at Adam Blaue, Corning, Duncan McClellan Gallery, Habatat Galleries, Hive Contemporary, Kuivato Gallery, Penland Gallery, Piece and Vetri Gallery. He is a full-time artist, his studio is located in Arizona.
