I am an artist and physician and my work is about the human spirit. A photo of my daughter inspired the Rainmakers series. I laughed when I saw her pose, her look of confidence beneath the protective armor of her ‘rose’ goggles, and her stance, comfortable in the knowledge that she will be queen of the backyard. The poet Maya Angelou said “I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life’s a bitch. You’ve got to go out and kick ass”. This piece is about summer days spent painting nails and practicing kick ass, protected by rose goggles and the joy of limitless possibility.
I create my art through a painterly use of glass threads, which I hand-pull from a crucible containing molten glass. The threads are then used to carefully compose a 3 dimensional image. The medium of glass is much like the human body, it forms a protective barrier, which is simultaneously beautiful, dangerous and fragile. Glass allows us a porthole through which to see and be see
