Being raised in a traditionally large Mexican family in Kansas City, Missouri was quite a challenge in living and sharing space among my four sisters and one brother. We were taught at an early age to be independent and strong-minded which became our strong assets in our growing years.

Observing my mother create beautiful items with simple household textiles was my first introduction to being creative with my hands and imagination. My father’s domineering personality (some may call it stubbornness!) taught me to believe I could accomplish just about anything I imagined could be possible. Because of these strong features, which were highly instilled in me as child, I continue to expound on the endless opportunities which I continue to seek.

I began creating with glass in early 1980. Stained glass was my choice of media which lead me to create numerous window installations throughout Kansas, Missouri and Washington State.

In late 1980 I traveled to Australia. While visiting in Sidney I spent an afternoon at an art fair. I came upon my first kiln formed piece of glass art. What was this unusual form of glass that I was not familiar with? I was so intrigued with the beautiful piece of art and I knew I wanted to learn how to create such an intriguing medium of glass.

After returning from Australia I was unable to locate someone local to teach me the fascinating technique of glass fusing. I researched glass fusing on the internet and came upon a school of glass called Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington. I decided if I was accepted to the school of glass I would travel the distance to study glass for the required session. The glass angel must have been watching over me because soon after I applied to Pilchuck my husband was offered a job change in Seattle and soon after we settled in I was informed that I was accepted to Pilchuck Glass School! My path had been paved towards a new learning experience.

Since 1999 I continue to enjoy creating fused glass art. Having the opportunity to continue to expound on this endless medium has been enriching to me because of its unlimited potential and natural beauty. I will continue to grasp the endless learning experiences creating fused glass art!
